A leap year occurs every four years to help synchronize the calendar year with the solar year, or the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit about the sun, which is about 365¼ days. Every four years we add an extra day on, February 29th, because we would lose around six hours every year and after 100 years our calendar would be out by approximately 24 days in relation to the seasons.
